Casting Corner: Michael Douglas, Katherine Heigl, Sam Rockwell and More

Michael DouglasKatherine Heigl

Here’s a quick look at some of the casting announcements made recently:

Michael Douglas: Douglas - who hasn’t been in a hit in quite some time - has had his name attached to two different projects in the past few weeks. For Solitary Man, the Oscar-winner will return to a subject he is quite familiar with: infidelity. Michael is set to play a car magnate whose life is affected by business and marital problems. Production on Solitary begins in November. Meanwhile, Douglas is also planning to reteam with his Traffic director (Steven Soderbergh) for a biopic on Liberace. Michael will tackle the role of the flamboyant character while Matt Damon is in discussions to play Scott Thorson, a man who sued the pianist for palimony.

Box Office Breakdown: Burn After Reading Smokes Past Competition

Burn After Reading

Around this same time last year, Tyler Perry was beating George Clooney in a battle at the box office. Now the Sexiest Man Alive is having his day.

This past weekend, cineplexes were kept busy with a handful of new releases. Although each film had a chance of reaching #1, - starring Clooney, Brad Pitt and Frances McDormand - emerged as the eventual winner. But the news wasn’t so bad for the other three contenders. Theatergoers clearly starving for fresh material placed all four wide release entries into the chart’s four top slots.

In this clip, audiences are treated to a more revealing look at The Spirit. In the film, an adaptation of Will Eisner’s comic book series, Gabriel Macht will play a man who has faked his own death and now fights crimes from the shadows of Central City. Meanwhile, Samuel L. Jackson stars as The Octopus, the villain who intends to wreak havoc on the entire city.

Spirit, also starring Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johansson, opens December 25.

Frank Miller Addresses Concerns of The Spirit

The Spirit is due out this ChristmasIn a recent blog post, graphic novelist/director Frank Miller addressed complaints and concerns aroused by fans upon the circulation of the teaser trailer for The Spirit, which can be seen after the jump.

In Will Eisner’s comics, the Spirit’s suit and hat are printed blue. In the posters, ads, and trailer, he is seen wearing black. Miller explained that due to printing issues, the Spirit’s clothes appear blue when meant to be black (take Superman’s hair, for instance).

Similarly, the black attire and red hints a tad reminiscent of Miller’s own Sin City, but he assures readers that the teaser trailer is just that—a tease. “To drive the point home, The Spirit, despite any accidental impression left by that kickass teaser-trailer, is a full-color movie. Sin City is, visually, a playhouse for black and white,” he clarifies.
